Can I Work as a Full-Time Words-With-Friends Player?

Last Saturday I went to a job search seminar. It was the scariest thing I'd done in a long time. As I drove towards the Sheraton in downtown Bellevue, it was all I could do to hold onto the steering wheel and not pull off at the exit that led to our church, which, incidentally, was having a choir rehearsal and BBQ social.

I pulled into the Sheraton parking. It wasn't hard to spot fellow job seekers. Only two kinds of people head into downtown Sheraton on a Saturday morning: retired vacationers--there were very few--and people attending seminars. They all dressed the part of "professionals looking for a job": women in their semi-casual jackets, slacks, and one-and-a-half-inch heels; men in their button down shirts, dark pants, and small polyester totes, which they got for free from a trade show. I walked towards the funnel of people getting greeted by the suited (no ties, nobody wears ties any more!) people hosting the seminar, and I thought, "I am just pretending to be one of them!"

Get me to that choir rehearsal, please!!! In fact, I'd rather be anywhere else in the world than in that place at that moment.

Still, I survived the two-hour-long session, "mingled" with a lady next to me, who happened to be very bubbly, and even managed to ask a question of the speaker. The speaker turned out to be informative and interesting. An important point he brought up was that we need to think through what job we want and whom do we want to work for. It sounds obvious, but in this day and age, most people just want a job that pays.

Someone once said, "The best thing in life is to be able to do what you love and somehow get paid for it". I thought about the things I enjoy doing, like playing Words With Friends or thinking about life, the universe, and all that, or reading the latest book by Kazuo Ishiguro, and I wondered about the possibilities of turning one of them into a full-time job. Okay, it's not likely, but it's nice to imagine such a sweet job exists.

You'd make a good salary playing WWF against me, as I rarely beat you!

Good for you stepping out of your comfort zone, even though the future is still unknown.
